Statement on possible WestJet pilots strike and trip cancellation insurance
News Release
Release Date: 05/16/2023 Staff Reference: Kevin Dorse(Toronto, May 16, 2023) – WestJet airlines has advised passengers travelling between May 15 and May 21, 2023 on WestJet and Swoop of a potential labour disruption affecting its operations.
The airline has indicated this morning that "Should flight delays or cancellations occur, impacted guests will be refunded or reaccommodated, as applicable."
In the event of a disruption, trip cancellation policy holders are strongly encouraged to contact WestJet or Swoop for information about refunds or other accommodations prior to submitting a claim with your insurer.
As of September 2022, new federal Air Passenger Protection Regulations require that airlines provide passengers with either a refund or rebooking, at the passenger's choice, when there is a flight cancellation, or a lengthy delay, due to a situation outside the airline’s control that prevents it from ensuring that passengers complete their itinerary within a reasonable time. They apply to all flights to, from and within Canada, including connecting flights.
If you have purchased travel insurance, please review your policy to see if the benefits provided in it cover losses that are not covered by the airline or other travel suppliers.
Disputes over refunds and credits should be directed to your travel service provider, transportation carrier or the Canadian Transportation Agency.
